Fans of the soap opera will remember that earlier this year, during a brief romantic relationship with Chas Dingle, physician Liam Cavanagh found a lump in her breast, which resulted in a triple negative breast cancer diagnosis. Since then, Chas has had a double mastectomy. She has pushed her family to be checked after learning she had the defective BRCA2 gene.
After their brief romance, Liam has already moved on to Ella Forster, a new surgical receptionist. The two went on a date last week and even had a kiss outside The Woolpack before Ella had to abruptly leave, leaving Liam a little bewildered.In later scenes, after her operation, Charity Dingle exhorts Chas to risk everything in order to pursue Liam because they first clicked this year.
But in typical soap opera fashion, Ella, who observes a poignant moment between Liam and Chas, is also inspired to win Liam over—especially in light of Liam’s wise remarks from his ex-wife, Leyla Harding. Leyla misinterprets a chat with Liam earlier and tells Ella that he only has eyes for her.
Later, after much waiting, Chas and Liam are finally ready to confess their feelings to one another, but Ella gets in the way with an awkward love triangle. After they kiss, Liam finds himself consenting to Ella’s proposal to become a relationship because he is unable to refuse.
