There is little doubt that Post Malone’s national shift is about to happen. The former “Rockstar” rapper has been hinting at a shift to a twangier sound, and on Wednesday, March 20, he shared a sneak peek of a new song, indicating that he’s prepared to line dance to a different beat.
After an unofficial version of the song purportedly came out lately, Posty shared on Instagram, “Let’s go with the real mix this time @morganwallen,” of an unnamed duet with the number-one country artist Morgan Wallen. In the accompanying 30-second video, Malone can be seen smoking a cigarette, drinking a beer, and hanging out by himself in a dark room while enjoying the upbeat country collaboration.

Wallen sings, “It takes two to break a heart in two,” and then Malone enters on the mid-tempo song with a soulful, “Baby you blame me, and baby I’ll blame you,” over a banjo and minimalist drum kicks. The guys shout a spirited chorus together, “I had some help, it ain’t like I can make this kind of mess all by myself.” “Act as though you couldn’t tell that teamwork makes the dream come true; I had some help, too. Don’t act like you can’t help me pull that bottle off the shelf.”

Malone appears to be ecstatic with the song in the video, blasting it from his phone while grinning, shaking his head, and slapping his leg. Republic Records, Malone’s record company, left a comment on the page that said, “We are so ready!!! [crying laughing emoji].”

Malone has been teasing his country music for a while now; last week, he shared a little clip from a new project he’s working on with Luke Combs. Once more, holding one of his trademark cigarettes, Malone tosses his head and plays air drums with great energy while belting out a song that seems to be called “Ain’t Got a Guy For That.”

Malone has been embracing his pedal steel tendencies more and more. He has always loved classic country artists like Hank Williams and has always preferred bedazzled Nudie-style Nashville clothes. One of his ventures was a “duet” rendition of Joe Diffie’s “Pickup Man” last year, which debuted at No. 54 shortly after Malone collaborated with Wallen and HARDY to perform the song at the 2023 CMA Awards. The song will be featured on HARDY’s forthcoming Hixtape Vol. 3: Difftape, which is scheduled for release on March 29.

Malone, who is currently streaming the Jake Gyllenhaal Road House remake on Amazon Prime, has not yet made a formal announcement about a full-length country project, and there was no more information available at the time of publication regarding the Wallen song. But he will undoubtedly feature on the first tune, “Fortnight,” from Taylor Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department, which drops on April 19.
